Introduction to Mountain Flying

Whether you have a few hours or a few days, we welcome all visiting pilots.  NZ Flying Adventures is able to offer flights to suit your needs and skill level in our 180hp Cessna 172.  Under the guidance of your Instructor you are able experience some of the best mountain flying in the world while having the opportunity to learn some of the basics of flying in our unique, mountainous terrain.

Options include a flight to Milford Sound or enjoy the spectacular glaciers around the Mt Aspiring and Mt Cook National Parks, or even a flight further south to Doubtful Sound and Stewart Island.

*An extra passenger is welcome on all flights at no charge

Example Flight Options

Wanaka & Mt Aspiring –  Allow 2 hrs  (1.25 hrs flight time)

Milford Sound Overfly & strip Landing – Allow 3.5 hrs  (2.25 hrs flight time)

Milford Sound Landing & strip landing – Allow 4 hrs (2.35 hrs flight time + DOC Fees)

Mt Cook & Glentanner – Allow 4 hrs (2.25 hrs flight time

1 Day Basic Mountain Flying

NZ Flying Adventures personalises your days experience and offers you flights to some of the country’s most unique and treasured places. The incomparable Milford Sound, the majestic Aoraki Mt Cook or the ruggedly beautiful West Coast are just a taste of the experiences that can be yours on this one day course.

During the day we will discuss a range of skills including:

  • Route Planning
  • Weather Analysis
  • Performance
  • Short Field Techniques
  • Terrain Flying
  • Crossing ridges
  • Crosswind Techniques
  • Decision Making
  • Engine Management & Cooling
  • Flight Emergencies and Survival Equipment

The 1 day course includes

  • 3 hours of flying
  • 2 hours of ground training & briefings
  • 2 other off field landings
  • All landing fees
  • Lunch

2 Day Intermediate Mountain Flying

This course is designed for those who wish to expand their knowledge and skills of Mountain flying.  It is our most popular course and is ideal for those who may wish to gain the necessary requirements to convert their overseas license to a NZ PPL.

Over the two days you will cover a combination of skills including:

  • Route Planning
  • Weather Analysis inc updrafts, downdrafts & mountain wave
  • Performance
  • Go-No-Go decision making process
  • Terrain Flying
  • Crossing ridges
  • Short Field Techniques
  • Crosswind Techniques
  • Decision Making
  • Engine Management & Cooling
  • Flight Emergencies and Survival Equipment

The 2 day course includes

  • 6 hours of flying
  • 2-3 hours of ground training & briefings
  • 5 off field landings
  • Milford Sound landing
  • All landing fees
  • Lunch

You may also want to obtain a New Zealand licence or a short-term validation; This course will cover all of the requirements for your NZ BFR and PPL terrain and weather awareness training.

4 day Advanced Mountain Flying

If you are visiting us for a longer period then this is a perfect opportunity to do some extended mountain flying training. This advanced course will benefit pilots of all abilities and experience levels and further enhance your flying skills including weather and terrain awareness.

Over the 4 days you will cover a combination of skills including:

  • Route Planning
  • Weather Analysis inc updrafts, downdrafts & mountain wave
  • Performance
  • Go-No-Go decision making process
  • Terrain Flying
  • Crossing ridges
  • Short Field Techniques
  • Crosswind Techniques
  • Decision Making
  • Engine Management & Cooling
  • Slow flight in multiple configurations & stalling in a turn
  • Valley turns
  • Flight Emergencies and Survival Equipment

The 4 day course includes

  • 10 hours of flying
  • 4 hours of ground training & briefings
  • 5 off field landings
  • Beach landing (tide dependent)
  • Milford Sound landing
  • Stewart Island landing
  • All landing fees
  • Lunch

You will see Milford and Doubtful Sounds, the majestic Mt Aspiring, Aoraki Mt Cook, the ruggedly beautiful West Coast and Stewart Island. While you are here you may also wish to obtain a New Zealand licence or a short-term validation; This course will cover all of the requirements for the NZ Private Pilots License and Commercial Pilots License, we can also complete your NZ BFR.
